  ICT is a testing mechanism designed to evaluate and verify individual components on a printed circuit board assembly (PCBA). It aims to detect defects or failures at the component level, preventing them from escalating into system-level failures.

  ICT Setup and Operation

  The core building blocks of ICT systems typically consist of several key components that work together to automate the testing process for electronic devices and systems. These usually include test systems, test fixtures, and test software.

  Test head, used to house electronic equipment for signal generation and measurement.

  Interface board, used to route these signals to the PCB.

  Control software used to manage test sequences and analyze results.

  One component of ICT is the Bed-of-Nails (BoN) fixture.

  The primary purpose of the nail-bed fixture is to establish electrical contact with various test points on circuit components for testing. This contact enables the measurement of electrical characteristics such as continuity, resistance, capacitance, and inductance.

  A nailbed fixture is a rigid flat plate typically made of aluminum or other durable materials. The plate features numerous spring-loaded pins or probes—resembling nails embedded in it—hence the name “nailbed.” These probes align precisely with the test points on the PCB, ensuring consistent and reliable contact. Test fixtures are usually custom-designed for specific PCB components.

  After placing the PCBA into the fixture, the test system activates the test fixture and starts the testing procedure.

  What tests does ICT perform?

  Short Circuits and Open Circuits: Check the integrity of electrical connections, including solder joints and traces on printed circuit boards (PCBs), to identify issues such as open circuits, short circuits, or incorrect connections.

  Electronic Component Testing – Resistors, Capacitors, Inductors, Diodes, Transistors, Integrated Circuits (ICs), LEDs, Connectors, Switches and Relays, Fuses, Oscillators and Crystals, Transformers.

  Voltage Levels: Measure voltage levels at various points in the circuit to ensure they meet specifications.

  Digital signals: Check digital signals, such as logic levels (high and low), to ensure that digital components are functioning properly.

  Analog Signals: Testing the accuracy and precision of components such as sensors or amplifiers when processing analog signals.

  Clock signals: For timing-related circuits, check the clock signals to ensure they have the correct frequency and stability.

  Boundary scan testing: Can be used to test the layout of ICs that support the IEEE 1149.1 (JTAG) standard.

  Programming and Configuration: During online testing, device programming involves using the necessary firmware or parameter configurations to program microcontrollers, PLDs, and other programmable devices, ensuring that they function properly as part of the PCB assembly.

  Custom test programs: Can be developed to meet unique testing requirements.
